Why I HATE IE
I relize hate is a very strong word, but I do mean it. What I intend to show you is that I do have a reason for it. Hopefuly I will convince you to use something other than Internext Explorer. I admit that some of the points made here only apply to IE 6, IE 7 only being margenally better.
Technology support
On the left there are two images that I have made to over lap, they are both alpha transparent PNGs that is Portable Network Graphics an image format released in 1996 that has since bcome an indistry standard. If you are viewing this page in IE, you will that the two images have a gray background and the effect is quite bad. For this reason it is very unsafe to use such images on a web page. And when there are many effects that can be created with them, this does limit the web designers toolbox. IE 7 finally fixed this, after only 10 years of waiting.
Then there is quite a few other technologies that it would be nice if they finally sorted them out, such as XHTML and MathML. Though the one I am looking ford to most would be SVG, Scalable Vector Graphics. I have made a simple example of a clock, though many other more interesting things are possiable, includeing games.
Layout bugs
When designing a web site, one of the most painfull things is making it look the same on as many browsers as possiable. And the problem is mainly due to Internet Explorer. Most browser follow the standards quite closely to the point that something that works in Opera, will work in Firefox and Safari too most of the time. There will always be some mistake in IE. It is not only what it does not impliment, it lags behind every other major browser but the totaly unexpected results. See no menus for one example.
Security
IE is famouns for is security, for the wrong reasons. So I not going to dwell on it. It has one big disadvanage at this point, it is tighly meashed with Windows to the point it can't be uninstalled. The problem with that is once you have taken control of IE you can do anything you like to the operating system.
I have writen my own exploit for IE and I don't think they will fix it. I am not going to share and details on that though.
Dumb user interface
Ok so this only only applys to IE7. I can't stand the mess they made of the user interface. It looks cool, but nothing is where you would expect it to be. Most other people I talk to say the same thing. I don't know what they were thinging when they made it.
So please stop useing it!
So now you have seen why you should not be using IE, are you going to change? There is a number of choices such as Opera or Firefox. My pick would be Firefox as that is what I use.
